[Reality-Bytes]~The Teammates-In-Law!!!

23 Feb

Corporate life isn’t always a piece of cake, just like how it is otherwise!
There are people you get to meet here who fall at different levels of comfort with respect to you. One among them is that individual who ends up being your Team Lead (TL).
As per legends – A Team Lead is supposed to be someone approachable, who can help you when you need that little direction, who hears you out before decision-making and who sees that you mature into a fine individual/resource/leader in future – We surely have such individuals around us. Kudos to them!
And then there are those kinds who seem to land directly from the skies above! This post talks about such divine TLs – whom I refer to as our Teammates-in-law (TMILs)!! 😉
These TMILs are metaphorical to the Torturous Mothers-in-Law (TMILs again!!! 😛 ) we hear about outside corporate jungles!

Case1: Back then…

Shirish was a fresher recruited on-campus. The year was 2006. He was supposed to join his firm and friends had warned him about the existence of TMILs, the aliens in human form! 😛

TL: “Show me the draft of the mail before you send it to the client!”
He: “Sure!”

It isn’t unusual of the TLs to be very protective of their fresh wards.
But it was not to be for Shirish in his first experience as a team member! He got a monstrous TMIL!

TMIL: “Complete that work quickly and send me the mail. Don’t mail the client directly. I’ll do that!”
He: “Ok!”

Client appreciations are vital in more ways than one. They not only are ingredients to a well brewed appraisal, but are also a great moral booster for an individual. Be it individualistic or group appreciations, the TLs usually tend to share it with their team! TMILs on the other hand tend to consider even the group appreciations as just their own!

The TMIL always remembered Shirish and his two teammates (also freshers!) when there was blame to be shared! To the project manager, everything seemed to be working out pretty smooth till that one fine (read: dark) day when the TMIL’s voice raised beyond acceptable (and cubicle) limits! The 3 freshers couldn’t take it anymore and returned the favor, with interest!

Note: From experience, it must be said that – whatever the 3 freshers did wasn’t right either! They could have informed about the bad experience to their manager, instead of letting the steam to build on within!

Case2: Back to the future!

Sonali was a millennial recruited on-campus. The year was 2011. She was supposed to join her firm and friends had warned her about the age old existence of TMILs, the Gen-X aliens in human form!

TL: “Ping me the draft of the mail before you mail it to the client!”
She: “Yo!”

The protective nature of the TLs towards their wards still continues to exist. Amen!
But it was not to be for Sonali in her first experience as a team member! She got a monstrous TMIL!

TMIL: “Complete that work quickly and send me the mail. Don’t mail the client directly. I’ll do that!”
She: “Huh!”
She (thinks): *ye, what other work you have?*

The TMIL still love to play the blame-game but it wasn’t just that. The TMIL hated the fact that Sonali used the OCS (office communicator), met friends and was active on social networks (FaceBook via mobile phone)! To the project manager, everything seemed to be working out pretty smooth till that one fine (read: dry) day when the TMIL’s voice raised beyond acceptable (and cubicle) limits! Sonali couldn’t take it anymore and recorded it all, on her mobile phone!

Query Note: What should Sonali do now?
Though she would love to post the ‘TMIL Tamasha’ on the company’s internal video sharing portal or worse, on YouTube – she is stopped by her millennial friend saying that it could go against her in the name of breaching company’s policy on sharing! She’s instead asked to report the same to the respective HR guys!
So the query still remains – What should Sonali do?

Disclaimer: This post is based on real incidents. The author has taken enough care to shade reality. Any similarity henceforth would be a result of the reader’s extraordinary imaginations! IT-happens! 😀

    {to be read in MMS’ voice :P}
“I strongly condemn this wanton act and we shall raise objections at the appropriate forum. We shall ensure justice is done and the aggrieved parties shall be duly take care of.”

    j/k

If you have a problem with a fellow team-mate, get in touch with the tl. if s/hes the problem go to the manager. if s/hes good for nothing or problem doesnt get solved get in touch with hr. if that doesn’t solve anything and hr is as usual (:P) next step is to reach out to someone higher up either in account or hr or both.

if all these things dont work, after repeated and different types of attempts, Release the Kraken!!

PS: “leaking” video, audio clips smacks of you know what. take the high road even if the others only try to pull you down. conscience is obviously a far higher being to answer to.

PPS: This goes not only for performance related issues, if you know what i mean.

or you could just write a massive whine/rant-fest on ch1 without dropping names and hope someone sends a link to that post to your tl 😛
