Exception(al)!! :)

im_not_geek

Over the last few weeks, I had been very busy…naturally the frequency of me posting my writeups here, had taken a backseat…14 hours of work plus 2 hours of travel took most of my daily time…

For an interactive person like me, this situation is pretty sad….

Friends started getting worried about my constant absence both online and offline. Two of you lovely ladies, Isd and CuteAngel were sweet enough to mail me enquiring if I was doing ok…Thank you buddies…its always a nice feeling if someone misses me, either for my posts or for my visits on their blogs…whatever be the reason, it means a lot…Owe you one ladies! 🙂

Also not finding me available on the office communicator, I got mails from a few close buddies asking me if I was alive…Yes, I was indeed alive but in hell!! 😉 Thanks guys for those caring mails!!  🙂

Four weeks ago, I was on bench with no work allocated to me…and then I got an opportunity to replace a guy who was going on leave for his wedding in a highly sensitive project and with complex reports to be developed, but more importantly to capture the work ethics in 2 days time before the groom left on his approved leave. I was supposed to be his best man at work!! 😉

Three weeks of replacement time ends this coming monday, and  I must say it was the best learning experience in the shortest time possible…Over a week, I got used to the 14 hours per day routine that I will now miss (unless I get screwed again in the next assignment! :P) for sure.

It was lovely to work in co-ordination with my onsite guy…he was helpful to the last detail…I would say, it would have been impossible without him and his constant push…!! Thanks man! 🙂

And best thing is that the clients are happy with what I have delivered in the last 3 weeks and so was my onsite co-ordinator and manager…so the efforts were worthwhile…yay! 😀

For the two weeks that I was on bench prior to this project, I was involved in the making of a video of my parody for the annual day event of a few verticals in my company. I had a lovely time writing the lyrics and the storyboard…as well as in the directing and editing of the shoot!! Though I missed attending the event owing to work, I got to know that at the event there was a loud roar of applause and cheering…the feedbacks by a handful who saw it offline have also been awesome…!! 😀

As of now am working on a photo-video for another event thats coming up next tuesday!!  And I’m lovin’ it!! 😀

[Tamasha]: Bilateral Bakwaas! ;)

It was a peaceful weekend, basically with nothing to do. All plans had failed, as usual either with the excuse of “no time” or “no budget”! But then there’s some power up there which doesn’t allow you do nothing. It sends down someone to nibble into your time, mind and if you’re non-vigilant, to possibly squeeze some money out too.
I was lazing at home listening to music on the laptop while simultaneously scribbling on the virtual notepad. My roommate called up to inform me that our house owner would be landing home anytime that evening to “talk” with us. 😦

Their call conversation had gone somewhat like this:
Owner: “Are you at home?”
Roomie: “No sir, am out for some work”
O: “Is anyone else home?”
R: “Ya, Sreeram is always at home”! (what the…)
O: “Inform him that I’ll come in the evening. We need to talk!”
R: “OK…”

Our call went this way:
Roomie: “The owner is coming to talk…”
Me: “Who? the dawg?”
R: “Ya, the dawg is coming to bark…he gave a missed call and I called him back!”
Me: “What?? Were you outta your mind to do that? You should have said – no one’s at home!”
R: “Ya I should have…but I said you are at home”
Me: “You $%^&*…when’s he coming?”
R: “Sometime in the evening he said”
Me: “Ok…Now my entire evening is gonna $%^&* up! Try to join the fun!”

Our owner gives us missed calls as if we dont pay him the rent. Since I dont respond to his missed calls, he calls my roomies who by instinct (don’t ask me) entertain missed calls! 😛
To give a preface of my owner – He’s a simply complicated gone-case. Period.

The dialogues we have is very similar to the Indo-Pak talks. Indecisive, Inconclusive and as always a FAILURE. 😀

Ever since I got to know that the owner was coming, I thought of getting ready by preparing an agenda with pointers. So at the end of it all, the pointers I had were:
1) To request (again) the still pending lease agreement
2) To ask him when he would come next, so as to get the rent receipts ready and signed.
And ya, thats it…I had nothing else on the table from our side!
Oh ya…I had the usual plan B, in case he again asks me my history and CTC!
1) To ask details about his daughter. (It was effective once…so 100% record! ;))!

old_man

He landed home around 9:15 pm and by then my roomie was home…hehe…so we were now two who could share the pain! I cannot put every dialogue that took place between us till 11 pm – not that its confidential, but its 100 odd minutes of plain simply useless nonsense.

The owner seemed to have come with an agenda of his own:
1) Understand the Satyam fiasco
2) Enquire if his (honourable :P) tenants still have their jobs
3) Enquire if they’ve got a pay hike (or cut…though this wont affect him a bit)
4) Rise the rent
5) Rise the caution deposit
Note: Say ‘No’ to all that they ask. If not, cook a sad story till they pity me.

So at the end of “talks”…our respective agendas stood like this:

Our Agenda:
1) To request the still pending lease agreement
–> He said, “Ok, only if you pay me the tax amount that I will have to bear for giving you that agreement”
–> We replied, “Oh ok…then no need…we’ll pay our own taxes”
2) To ask him when he would come next, so as to get the rent receipts ready and signed.
–> He said, “Why do you need that? I don’t know when I am coming next time”
–> We replied, “Oh ok….we’ll see that at the time of rent payment this month end”

His Agenda:
1) Understand the Satyam fiasco
–> We said, “Oh! None of us know…we are not working in that company! We know only whats in the paper!”
–> He replied, “My son was saying….blah blah blah…….”
Our thought –> *Why ask when you know everything?* Hmmph!
2) Enquire if the tenants still have their jobs
–> We said, “Sir, why do you think so?”
–> He replied, “Looking at what happened to Satyam, I thought since you also work for IT sector….blah blah….”
Our thought –> *Why ask when you know everything?* Hmmph!
3) Enquire if they’ve got a pay hike or cut
–> We said, “We don’t get hikes in January sir”
–> He replied, “But my son gets it every January….blah blah….”
Our thought –> *Why ask when you know everything?* Hmmph!
4) Rise the rent
–> He said, “Give me 1K more…You can add another roommate…you’ll reduce 400 per head in this bad situation”
–> We replied, “You know the situation, then why increase by 1K?”
–> He said, “But you will reduce 400 per head you know”
Our thought –> *Why ask when you know everything?* Hmmph!
5) Rise the caution deposit
–> He said, “Normally we take 10 months advance as deposit”
–> We replied, “Ya, we had paid 10 months advance initially…then you increased the rent”
–> He said, “Ya, but if we calculate 10 times of that now…..blah blah”
Our thought –> *Why ask when you know everything?* Hmmph!
Note: Say ‘No’ to all that they ask. If not, cook a sad story till they pity me.
–> We requested, “Sir, give us your account number so that we can transfer the rent online. Its tough and time wasting to go to your relative’s place every month to give it”
–> He replied, “In the year 2000 and 5…you know….blah blah…”

So as you see, there was nothing out of it for both parties at the end of an hour and forty-five minutes of time pass. Just like  how the Indo-Pak bilateral talks go on. Only difference is that we didn’t spend any tax-giver’s money unlike in the actual talks! 😀

A journey into this year….

31st Dec’08: I had to catch an early train to Bangalore, my hometown. As I headed towards Chennai Central on a MTC bus, I had a sudden realization…Three years had passed by since I came down to Chennai! Phew…how…err…
…I was now being tapped on my shoulders by a man in his early thirties, who was sitting next to me…

He: I am going to Warangal, you?
Me: Bangalore…
He: Bangalur, Kar-a-nataka-waaa??
Me: Yes. Warangal, Andhra na?
He: Yes yes yes, Aaandhra Pardesh wonly…my birth place.
Me (with a smile): Hmmm…nice.
He: I know little little Englees…learning only from talking taking.
Me: Good…that is how one learns the best.
He: What is your name? My name is Madhukar.
Me: Sreeram. Nice to meet you.
He: Nice nice nice. You in Software-a?
Me: Yes. Read the company name on the bag, didn’t you?
He: Yes yes yes, a little Englees I can read. Me a Welder, I do welding.
Me: Hmm…good…
He: You travel on bus always, or because of recession?
Me: Err…

Though I took the bus as always to the station, that question stumped me. How aware was he of the on-going situation inspite of his knowing “little little little”! Phew…

vogue

I reached the station an hour early before the train was scheduled to depart…I sat down with a cup of coffee, going back down the lane picturing how things shaped up at work or otherwise in the last 3 years. It wasn’t all that creamy…most of the time, I had to settle for the cake sans the icing…there were some who liked just the icing! 😉

I took my seat on the train…and as it moved away from Chennai, I had lots of time to do a retrospect on the year that went by.

The third year had its share of ups and downs…the ups were surprising and memorable…the downs were unavoidable and forgettable…The number 3 once again proved lucky to me, as I stepped up the ladder with a promotion last June…it was unexpected mainly due to the sheer number of peers who were in contention. On the other hand, most of my batchmates and friends moved out…either out of Chennai or of the Company on the pretext of transfers, studies and change-overs…

Compared to the first two years, I sadly feel that I have lost all my luck this year whenever I travelled from Chennai to Bangalore (and vice versa)…its been only ailing adults and wailing kids in the vicinity of my berth…God knows what happened to the normal adults and the 20+ whatever damsels…Hope things fall in place this year. Btw, am travelling tonight back to Chennai…Fingerz Crossed! 😉

As the train approached Bangalore, I was tapped again on my shoulders…it was a well built manly Transvestite in a saree who  brought me back to reality. I smiled at him/her/that, but he/she/it wasn’t interested in my smile…With hands being clapped like the beating of drums, that person with remains of pan-beeda all over his teeth then asked me for money…With music still playing in my ears, I shook my head sidewise indicating that I wasn’t interested in funding nor feeling pity over his genetic confusion. He blurted some abuses and left the scene to tap some other sleeping shoulder. Now do I feel bad about the abuse which I didn’t get to hear, thanks to the earphones???!! 😀

Anyways, I reached home hoping that the year ahead will have many more memorable moments in the pipeline! 😉
And also, a very big thanks to each one of you in this virtual blog world for being a part of my life…It wouldn’t have been what it is, without any of you! 🙂

Rants of a Vegetarian Butcher!! ;)

Mind had been blank for the last couple of days and hence I was finding it difficult to write or compose something down just for the mere lack of ideas…thought I will pick some tag that’s lying in many of the blogs that I religiously follow but then life plays this trick on you wherein you like it or not, it ends up giving you something to write about…

Well..

.

1) Of late, thanks to the inflation we guys have started to cook dinner at home…yippee! Homely food so you may think…but no…It’s just food (edible of course) cooked at home…we have managed to learn and decently cook about 5-6 dishes, apart from the variety of rice items that we can make. But still the homely food that any of our mom’s would cook is far far better than our food cooked at home…one thing our food does to us, is controls our weight (we use minimal oil) as well as the disappearance of the few remaining coins in our pockets!! 😉

I basically end up doing all the vegetable chopping…ya am the “vegetarian butcher”…and due to over exposure to the brutality of chopping the vegetables, my eyes have either lost their sensitivity or have become terribly confused. For instance, I was butchering the onions and my eyes act perfectly fine…and after the onions were done with, it was the turn of the potatoes…what do my eyes do now?? They get over sensitive, over burdened, over loaded and cry…yes, the tears of a ‘vegetarian butcher’s joy’!!! phew! 😀

Cooking tip: Look into the eyes of the onion as you chop…it wont make you weep!! You peep, you weep!! 😛

2) Yesterday late night, around 12:30 I was busy watching a movie called “Dirty Deeds” (no…no…no…it’s not that kinda movie…pls :P) with the lights on (see I told you, it’s not that kinda reel) and what do I get to see (not on the screen)…Jerry…yes a mouse, a rodent…running happily on the floor of my bedroom…Now since I was one brave soul, I didn’t yell my guts out…I just ran out of my room to inform roomy #1 who was sitting in the hall, surfing…the hot news made him climb up his chair asking me “Where? Where??…How big? How many??”

His immediate action made me ignore him and knock on the bedroom door of my other 2 roommates…they were thankfully awake and didn’t cry foul…Roomy #2 joined #1 on the chair…but roomy #3 was one brave soul who immediately came with a broom in hand (I still feel like he slept with a broom in hand…if not, where the hell did he get it from?) asking the same “Where? Where?? How big? How many??” as if he was going on a hunt! 😛

#1 and #3 were so alike, yet miles apart…

Commander #3 and myself entered my room with a broom each in hand and ready for the kill…but I guess our Jerry had got enough time to escape from us, the Toms…He lives to see another day…probably more…

PJ time: What will Tom be called if he keeps looking here and there for Jerry?? – A peeping Tom!!

3) Today evening as I reached home from office past 8pm and closed the door behind me, I heard a knock. I opened to find my high and dry (not drunk, but definitely dry) house owner in front of my eyes…Being terrified, I said something which I should not have said…I said, “Come in, pls have a seat sir”!! OMG!!

He royally comes in and sits…just like an elephant does in a circus, on command from its ring-master. Only difference is that this dude of the 60’s doesn’t have a trunk, and ya a tail. Rest all are the same…big ears, protruding teeth, big bu*t and an indifferently big mouth!!

All his features are don’t matter much…The only and most annoying thing he does is talk with no fullstop, ask questions non-stop and park his base for an indefinite timing.

He tells me that he came cos it was raining outside…I didn’t know where outside, as outside my window it wasn’t raining for nuts! Hmm…my bad day I assumed. Nah! I was sure!! 😦

He starts off with a “Why is the stock market falling, when the tomato prices are rising?”

The best thing about him is that, he needs an answer to his questions…right or wrong, is never a concern. Initially I used to struggle to think of answers…but one day he himself gave me a clue by saying “Say something son”!!

I answered him with a “Tomato prices are rising cos the fuel prices have gone up…and stocks fall when crude oil prices increase”…am not sure even now if I am right…but he was ok with it!! 😀

I am meeting him today for like the 9th time in my 9th month in this house…and today he asked me my name, for the 9th time…then asked me my cell number…ya for the 9th time…the company I work for, yes 9th time again!!

But I have learnt the game…the hard way of course, but learnt nevertheless…

I asked about his daughter (“and sir, u said her name is??”) for the 9th time…I know he hated when I asked that, for the 9th time…I asked him about his son’s bank profile…9th time of course…got to know it’s the 2nd largest bank in the world for the 9th time…but I doubt…again for the 9th time…phew, and the show will continue I guess…hehe

Finally after about 2 hours…of which he brainwashed me for close to 90 minutes…he watched TV for 15 minutes…and also read the newspaper for 15 minutes before asking me “Can I take your leave??”…I was like “What? Now what does he want to take away?”…He understood that I didn’t get it, and so clarifies with a “Shall I leave??” and I smile big time with “Ofcourse, ya ya…pls”…and the mammoth disappears!! 😀

Food for thought: Life makes us experience all that we don’t ask for…yet we crave for something we don’t have…Hmmm…

[Sing-a-Tune]: I wanna be a HIPPIE!! ;)

Try to sing this with a tune…faster the better!! 😛

***********************************************************************

I wanna be a hippie…
Wanna grow long hair!
I wanna travel all free…
If not, atleast the lowest fare!

I wanna dress like the hippies…
Like they did in the 1960s!
And live an unconventional life…
Like on the edge of a knife!

If ever I’ll be one, I’ll be a poor hippie..
I got no dollars, only paisa counting to a Rupee..
I wanna be on a high, like a hippie…
Sad or heartbroken, yet be happy happy!

With no much fanfare…
I wanna marry another hippie!
And as I play with her hair…
Wanna shout Yippee Yippee!

If you wanna join me as a groupie…
We’ll be freaky, creepy, crappy!
Anything apart from being so geeky…
Wanna be on the loose, like a hippie!

Kung-fu in Kitchen!! ;)

I was free and at home the whole of today and so was Satish, my roommate. Two of the other roommates were out, Samik reporting to his boss at office and the dutiful husband in Udit reporting to his wife who stays at his native with his parents. Due to the recent inflation and removal of subsidy at lunch in the office, all four of us had decided to cook at home for dinner on weekdays and all times on weekends.

Its been 2 whole weeks now since the new arrangement and each one of us have voluntarily taken up certain responsibilities.

Samik cooks well…so he’s the official cook of the house now…
Udit is good at deciding what to be cooked and the combinations….believe me, its a tough job to decide whats to be done for that moment. And above that he does the weekly shopping too with Samik.
Satish is the laziest and uninterested among the lot…he can basically survive on chips, finger fries, et al. However we engage him in work that requires him to move less like cleaning of rice, cleaning the dining area (once he sits there), opening of packets (his fav.) etc…
And me, I love to see the vessels clean…so I do all the dish washing!! I am the scavenger of the pack!! 😉 Apart from this, I do the small shopping thats needed on a daily basis like getting milk, curds, eggs, and so on.

And today since our cook was at office, and the lazy fella was lying down and watching TV…the onus of preparing food fell on my irresponsible (cooking) shoulders!! Since we get up late, I knew that breakfast was taken care of…err skipped!! 😀
At 11am I went to the shopping mall to get small things and ending up getting ready-to-eat Dosa batter and Aloo Tikki (a potato based snack)!! 😀
On reaching home, we decided that we would have dosa for brunch (breakfast+lunch) as it was already 12 noon….I was skeptical cos I didnt remember the last time I had entered the kitchen with the task of having to prepare something…If it was just for me, I wouldn’t have bothered but there was that lazy food critic sitting outside waiting with an empty plate in his hand. And to beat it all, there were not much instructions on the packet that I bought…It just said, ready to eat….hmm…
I poured the batter into a clean (I washed it :P) bowl and mixed the paste using a clean large spoon. Since it looked thick, I even added water (and a little salt) before mixing it again. Meanwhile set the gas on fire, with a few drops of oil on the non-stick pan. Now was the most dreadful task in the waiting…It reminded me of a few one-liners I got to hear before I took over the kitchen…

“Hope your dosa will come out round, just like dosas are meant to be”
“I can’t recognize a dosa by taste…but only by shape”
“Which country do you design best on a non-stick pan?”
All these echoed in mind as I let the batter into the pan…the round shape of the pan, was a blessing in disguise. 😛

The first dosa came out like how Srilanka is…but I remembered my mom saying “sometimes the first ones act weird”! So I put it on a plate, meant for me…
The second was even worse…went to the dustbin…
And then there was some magic…I am saying so cos I didnt do anything…
The 3rd, 4th and 5th dosas…came out right and round…just like the bug sitting outside wanted and I happily dropped those into his plates….he said he wanted no more as he was full….what could be expected with the packet of chips he had side by side…sigh!
Then the magic disappeared just like it had appeared…
The remaining dosas took shapes which I cannot describe…but I wasnt bothered as far as the batter was cooked…I recognize by taste after-all!! 😀
The magic was more of a fate I think…else why would it stop when it was my turn?!!

Evening it was time for Aloo Tikki…I was excited…and there were instructions on the backside of the packet too…And I prepared as written on it…and it came out brown crispy delicious as it was printed on the packet…But the bug of a Satish had to comment….he didn’t like it….and he said it with a “I don’t like these kind of snacks”…If you see in the flashback, I had taken neat 10 minutes to explain him that Aloo tikki is a chaat snack…but sigh, his mind didnt pick it up I guess…lazy it must be too!! 😦 But the best part was that I got to eat his share too….damn the check on calorie count for the day…I promise to climb more stairs (and hereby go for more coffee breaks in office) to compensate!! 😀

And when it was dinner time….I was so relieved to find Samik back from office….that I started writing this post…he’s calling now to have my dinner…I have to wash dishes too later….So till next time, signing off!! 😀

Sathyam Cinemas…Of pain and pleasure!!

Now who doesn’t know Sathyam Cinemas? If you are a Chennaiite or even if you have visited Chennai once so far in your lifetime, you would no doubt have heard and definitely have watched a movie or two over there. Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai is the most happening Movie complex in Chennai, closely followed by Inox Movies and Mayajaal. I have no idea if there are any other movie complexes in this lovely south Indian city that celebrated its birthday (368th is it?? I think so!! 🙂 ) just this week that went by.

Now I have no complaints about the way movies are screened at Sathyam Cinemas…nor am I gonna bang my head concerning over the rocket high prices of popcorns (they are good, and ask for some ‘extra butter’ to be added…yummmy deliciiouusss!! 😛 ) sold over the counters there.

But the concerns that I have is again (like last time) related to booking and this time its regarding the online booking portal. Earlier the payment gate was well within the Sathyam portal, but of recent they have started directing the payment through some secure channel…I have especially had terrible experiences the last 2 times that I have bought my tickets online. As I log in, select the movie of my choice, choose the seating location, reject the food-at-my-seat option…it leads me to the 3rd party secure payment gate and thats when all the problems have been. The last time I booked 2 tickets for 200 bucks, the seats were booked and monetary transaction was successful (as it got debited on my credit card statement) but it failed to take me back to the Sathyam Cinemas portal and hence I ended up without the booking-number…which is essential to collect tickets later…nor did it appear in my ticket booking history column on the portal…The same thing happened when I booked the tickets for 4 – 320 bucks – the time before.  😦

Asked the bank guys, they said that the money has been credited to Sathyam and Sathyam guys say that I have not booked any tickets as my booking is not reflected in their portal…What can I do, but Sigh! 😦

I don’t know if any of you have faced this problem…but this has made me not to use the Sathyam portal, and as a result watching movies on big screen at Sathyams has stopped since 2 weeks now…am missing it, no doubt…booking tickets is tough as I stay at a distance and mainly the timings don’t suit for me to rush in for a newly released movie…

So I’ve headed to Inox Movies and Mayajaal to watch movies of recent…but its not the same…Inox is a small place…and it being on the top floor of the Citi Center Mall, does not have that appeal of a complete movie complex…while Mayajaal being on the ECR (East Coast Road) is way too out of the city and travelling late nights is a pain with the cops and cons treating you alike if caught!! Moreover, I miss the Sathyam popcorns at these two complexes…hmmm…

Hope the Sathyam guys do something about this…esle I have no other go, but to watch movies at INOX and Mayajaal. Not that good an idea, if you ask me even in sleep.
